Hear are some points to consider in framing a jersey, t-shirt or other similar memorabilia.
Firstly, why do you want it framed:
- is it valuable in either dollar or sentimental terms
- your personal jersey from that memorable final of yester-year
- a signed jersey from the team you support
- a friend signed it so you want to keep it secure
- you bought it at an auction
- it is your year 12 shirt with all your mates signatures on it
- it is a commemorative jersey being framed to create a perpetual trophy
- your child's first jersey
- or whatever.
It is easy to just get a jersey framed - ring a couple of framers, take the cheapest quote and accept whatever materials are used.
The professional way to have a jersey framed
is
to bring it with you to Frame Craft
where a consultant
will explain and show you the options in framing the jersey
(these consultations can only be done in person, not over the telephone).
The styles of presentation in framing a jersey include:
(a) item floated on a matt-board within a frame unit |
| Brisbane Lions Jersey - Floated on a matt-board, (generally with a piece of Fome-cor up it's centre to tension the fabric) and displayed with a small border around it's extremities within the frame unit - maybe a plaque is placed underneath, but with no other information included |
 |
(b) item floated on a matt-board and extra matt-board(s) used to shadow box the item framed |
| In the Queensland Netball tunic image, you can observe the tunic fully displayed, but to personalise this item, the players all signed the matt-board after the tunic had been attached thereto -a simple, yet effective team momento |
 |
| In the Gold Coast Chargers image, the signed jersey is fully displayed but some additional information has been incorporated to provide team details and players named. How often have you looked at a framed jersey and wondered who had signed it? |
 |
(c) item floated on a matt-board, extra matt-board(s) used to shadow box item framed and then items cut into top matt-board |
| Wallaby jersey - Similar framing as for (b) but instead of placing information at back of frame unit, a team photograph and a plaque have been cut into the top matt-boards (note: there is no limitation to what information can be included in such a frame unit - that is the great advantage of custom framing as you can design a personalised piece to your own specifications) |
 |
| A variation of this method is shown with the Karrie Webb image where the photograph is cut into the top matt-board super-imposed over the lower part of the t-shirt |
 |
(d) multiple items displayed in frame unit, with or without shadow boxing |
| If multiple items are to be included in the frame unit, they will be positioned to best display them. By way of example, is this Olympian's tracksuit, togs, replica bronze medal and photograph |
 |
The foregoing are some of various layout styles, but what other issues should you consider as you decide how to frame your memorabilia item:
- how will it be held in place in the frame, and with what
- how many matt-boards will be used to display the jersey
- what glass cover is to be used (clear, reflection control or UV protective)
- should the glass be allowed to touch the item being framed
- if a signed jersey, do you want a list of players in the frame
- what information do you want with the jersey to "tell a story"
- does it need to be framed using conservation materials
It is our hope that you will entrust Frame Craft with the framing of your memorabilia - we have many customers who have complimented us on the framing of their special pieces.
As a guide to costs to custom frame an adult jersey, basic units start from around $365, including GST (at February 2009),
but
- jersey size,
- materials to be used in framing the jersey,
- and what other items are to be included with the jersey (eg photographs, plaques etc)
will determine the ultimate cost of your unique memorabilia framed unit.
