Newsletter No 17 - Autumn 2008
Greetings from Frame Craft some useful information firstly!
Acrylic paints
According to the Smithsonian Museum, acrylic paints most often used in the fine arts are water based; however, once dried, they are no longer water soluble. They can dry in less than a half-hour, whereas oils take a couple of days to dry to the touch
Acrylic paint films are not as hard as oil films. The soft spongy acrylic surface holds onto dust and dirt, making it hard to clean an acrylic painting. The surface can be easily abraded or dented with just fingernail pressure
Should mould growth appear on an acrylic painting, there is no real treatment that does not cause some degree of damage. Since prevention is the best care, controlling temperature and humidity in the area where the painting is hung may inhibit mould growth
Artists use a broad range of acrylic paints. The poorer quality acrylics have cheaper colorants that fade easily under UV light. Paint colours that fade may be due to the nature of the materials used and not something that can be reversed by a conservator.
Is air quality important to the preservation of framed artwork?
Smoke and dust are the two major types of pollutants we think of when handling artwork, but there are others:
- fumes from new construction materials, paints, stains, new carpeting, household cleaning supplies and fabrics (particularly dyed, fire retardant and crease resistant)
- many chemical pollutants that cause health problems also damage artwork
- sulphur is a major factor in the deterioration of paper
- sulphuric acid results when sulphur combines with moisture
- another form of sulphur is hydrogen sulphide, which tarnishes silver, and comes from (among other things) foam rubber and animal protein products such as wool and leather
- ammonia and chlorine-based cleaning products can inadvertently release fumes into the air that can harm artwork
Try to reduce pollutants by:
- using materials that dont create fumes
- absorbing fumes that are produced
- increase airflow to keep fume concentrations low
