Newsletter No 7 - Spring 2005

Another Spring is upon us with all the attraction of new life, energy and freshness - from a framing perspective, there is much you can do:

  • check all pieces of art hanging in your home, unit or place of business - are there any worrying signs of damage by the atmosphere or bugs? If you have any concerns, bring them to Frame Craft for assessment

  • need a new look? Custom framing will do that for those collectable pieces you have stored - getting them framed NOW might even save them!

National Costume

One challenge these past three months was to frame a full-size Serbian National Costume - our customer is now a naturalised Australian and while he knows he will never wear his father's Serbian National Costume, his allegiance with his mother country is such that he wanted the costume preserved.

The second photograph displays the style of moulding used (behind which we constructed a dressed timber box to provide the depth) and part of the costume as stitched through a fabric pinned to a backing board.

While large, the completed unit is proudly displayed in his home and the costume will be viewed by all the guests that enter the home - the brilliance of the Serbian National Costume lives on, despite not being worn any more!

This great FREE opportunity will enable you to send a gift wrapped item to family or friends so they receive it in time for Christmas (is Christmas really that close?)

Small art in LARGE frames

Can a small piece of art make a decorating statement? Definitely. Just frame it BIG.

"Small" art in large frames is one of the hottest trends in picture framing, according to The Art and Framing Council.

Executive Director Kim Ahern says " we all have small works of art we love, whether it's a special photo you've been carrying in your wallet, a print, a tiny antique or even a rare postage stamp".

The trick, of course, is all in the proportion and the result will draw the eye powerfully to the art object and gives it special importance.

Collector cards

Recently, we were asked to frame two sets of cards collected by our customer's father. As the images show, individual cut outs were made in the lower matt-board to accommodate each card and a second matt-board used to encircle the cards within each frame.

The 1959 Queensland Centenary and 1956 Melbourne Olympic Games card sets are now proudly displayed for another generation to view - far better than being hidden away in the bottom of a drawer!

If you have a set of cards, they can be framed!
