| Top ten list for
Custom Picture Framing
Recently, I was reading an American
publication and came across a custom framing article listing the
ten items that should always be taken to a custom framer for
framing. It’s a list that is indicative of the things we
constantly frame for our customers and we now share it with you.
Kimberley Ahern, Executive Director
of the American Art and Framing Council said in part "Most
of us know that valuable original art or limited edition prints
should be custom framed, and today’s professional framers can
frame just about anything, from priceless art to a special
t-shirt." |
 |
| "But
people forget that value is not just about money. If you have
something you want to preserve, you should invest in custom
framing. Pictures of your children and special pictures by your
children become lifetime treasures. A story about your son’s
soccer triumph in the local paper will have real meaning for you
after he has grown. Portraits of your kids can never be re-shot.
And as for a college diploma, you paid thousands and thousands of
dollars to get it. Doesn’t it deserve a good frame?"
According to the American Art and
Framing Council, "the 10 items you should always take to
custom framer are:
College Diploma
Original art and Limited Edition Prints
Family portraits
Art you buy on your travels
Your special favourite kids drawings
Collections
Photographs of great moments (sports, vacations etc.)
Bridal portrait
Baby portraits
Special newspaper or magazine
clippings about family matters.

Grandma remembers
Recently, one of our customers brought in
a baby’s play-suit and a photograph – her daughter was now living
overseas and had just had her first child. Naturally, grandma had to see
the new arrival and some wonderful times were had. Now, the little
play-suit and photograph are a treasured memory.
What is seen in the
photograph is how we displayed them ready for insertion into a framed
unit.

Arti-tec Hanging System
The value of this system is that artwork
is hung neatly without damaging the walls.
The track comes in 2 or 3 metre lengths
and can be anodised, white or black coated. The system uses either
plastic or steel cabling to which hooks are attached. Overall, the
system has good weight carrying capacities and it puts the emphasis on
the art, not the hanging system.
Special offer – purchase this starter
pack for the Arti-tec System before 19/12/2003:
- . 4 metres of track
- . 2 end caps
- . 10 plastic cables
- . 15 hooks
- . clips and screws
for $176 (GST inclusive)
a saving of over $30.00..
Picture frame check-up
Here are a few things to look for in
framed units that have been on your walls for some time:
- . if there is a dark fringe around the
bevel area of the matt, the matt needs replacing
- . if the art has mottled darker areas,
it is likely the backing board needs replacing
- . check for any evidence of fading –
there may be a need to replace the glass with one that offers some
UV protection
- . check the glass covering to ensure
there are no cracks – broken glass can damage art work
- . check the frame for any damage to
the corners and or the hanging system
- . check the overall frame unit for
insects, any damage to materials and make sure the back remains
sealed
Check-up time!
If you have any concerns about any framed
unit, bring it in and we shall be happy to have a look at it for you.
You pay for any materials replaced, but
no charge for labour in dismantling and reassembling the unit.

Collages
A collage is a group of items brought
together in a framed unit to display a range of images etc.
We specialise in designing the layout
after having a general discussion with you concerning what you envisage
for the completed package.
So, bring the collections out of
hibernation and let us create a design that will spice up your home or
office.

You know you’re in a Queensland summer
when…
- . the best parking place is determined
by shade instead of distance
- . hot water now comes out of both taps
- . you learn that a seat belt buckle
makes a pretty good branding iron
- . you break into a sweat the instant
you step outside at 7.30am
- . farmers are feeding their chickens
crushed ice to keep them from laying hard boiled eggs
- . the cows are giving evaporated milk
- . you realise that asphalt has a
liquid state.
Seriously though, the intensity of light
and heat in beautiful Queensland is such that you should never hang
artwork in direct sunlight or in areas where there is a lot of in-direct
light. As we reported in our Autumn Newsletter, "An ounce of
prevention in cautious framing and display is worth considerably more
than a pound of cure… since the prevention is relatively easy and the
cure simply does not exist.

Mum’s fan
I well remember as a young boy my mother
taking a breather at the end of a long hot summer’s day in her
favourite chair with this fan – it was interesting to find it recently
- it is now framed!
It’s a constant reminder of my mother,
whenever I look at it.
