Canvases generally need to be stretched over a stretcher frame prior to the work being framed. Thereafter, mouldings are used to complete the framing of the canvas.
Works on paper will generally be framed using matt-board so that the artwork is “loose hung” – by this we mean the artwork will be adhered to the reverse side of the matt-board and allowed to hang between the matt-board and the backing board. At all times the original piece of artwork retains it’s original character and can be retrieved from the framed unit at any time should the need arise.
Works on other mediums would need to be assessed on an individual basis and the experienced team at Frame Craft is always available to assist in that regard.
In summary, how an original piece of artwork is framed will determine it’s appeal – the components used need to compliment the artwork.
