'My paintings are about the human and architectural world of the inner suburbs – the unnoticed, unseen people and places of the city.
I love the way light can transform – it can touch buildings that are old, ordinary, neglected or lonely, and turn them into new pictures, with a new beauty.
Places can be threatening; dark and degenerate, or uplifting and energizing – often affecting several generations of people who live there.
They are imbued with the past lives of earlier residents until someone different comes along to change the place for good or bad.
Often the works have a lone figure -an alien in a manufactured landscape.’
Jan now paints and writes full time. Travel has led to paintings of other much enjoyed cities – Copenhagen, Florence, Venice, San Francisco and Sydney.
Jan’s book ‘Changing Places, Brisbane’ with 50 images of paintings was published by Macmillan Art Publishing, Melbourne 2002
